Love and Football: NFL Insiders on the Josh Rosen Question and Why It Matters

Sam Darnold turned the ball over 22 times this past season. Josh Allen completed 56 percent of his passes. Baker Mayfield was tackled by a police officer after trying to run from law enforcement.

But when NFL teams look at those quarterbacks, they see problems that can be fixed. On-field decision-making and accuracy and off-field discipline that can be taught and monitored.

Bleacher Report spent the past month doing our own investigation into the investigation, so to speak, asking scouts, coaches and executives what conclusions they’ve reached. We also channeled our inner Rosen, asking those NFL decision-makers: Why does this question matter so much, and what does it even mean?

You try to talk to [the player] about the nuances of the position, one scout said when asked how and why he attempts to determine if a prospect loves football. Does he want to work at it? Not just during the season, but what’s he going to do all offseason?

In other words, teams want a player, and especially a quarterback, to be personally invested enough that they know he’ll do what it takes to better himself as a professional.

The opener, in Oakland, will take place between Aug. 9-12. The trip to Tampa Bay will be the third preseason game for both teams. Commonly considered the dress rehearsal for the regular season, the contest will nationally televised, airing on CBS at 8 p.m. on Aug. 24.

Detroit’s two home opponents will be the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns. The Giants come to Ford Field between Aug. 16-19, while the Browns will be in town for the finale on either Aug. 30 or 31. This will be the 47th time the two franchises have met in the preseason.

Noticeably absent from the Lions’ list of preseason opponents are the Buffalo Bills. The two teams had gone head-to-head every year since 2002. They are scheduled to meet in Buffalo during the regular season later this year.dolphins_082

Browns sign Josh Gordon to exclusive rights tender

Josh Gordon is officially back with the Browns.

The team on Monday announced that the wide receiver was one of four exclusive rights free agents to sign a contract with Cleveland.

Other signees are wide receiver Matt Hazel, offensive lineman Austin Reiter and fullback Danny Vitale.

The Cowboys trade up for a linebacker. Virginia Tech’s Tremaine Edmunds and Georgia’s Roquan Smith are can’t-miss stat sheet stuffers on the outside, which makes both likely to go in the top 12. But right behind them is another rising former Crimson Tide star, Rashaan Evans, who is trending toward the top half of the first round.

Evans not only would provide a third ‘Bama option, but he also carries a little more position versatility than Edmunds and Smith do. He also would come with a little less cost if Dallas needs to trade up to get him. With linebacker being the team’s most glaring need for 2018, it’s not crazy for Jones to be aggressive in finding a special player for the position.

The best argument for a defensive tackle in Round 1 is the fact that the values in Rounds 2 and 3 are not as desirable. In contrast, with pick Nos. 50 and No. 81, there are solid Cowboys-type wide receivers to target in LSU’s D.J. Chark and Washington’s Dante Pettis. At linebacker, Ohio State’s Jerome Baker and Iowa’s Josey Jewell present appeal for Dallas’ scheme.

In June 2011, Wuerffel began losing sensations in his arms and legs following a virus. He was diagnosed with Guillain Barré syndrome, a painful disorder in which the immune system attacks the body’s nerves. Symptoms include weakness, exhaustion and possible paralysis depending on the severity.

Wuerffel initially was house-bound and struggled to maintain his body weight while helping his wife raise their three children and stay active with Desire Street Ministries.

“It took about a year and a half before I felt like I was pretty much over that,” Wuerffel said. “There was a lot of lingering fatigue.

“It’s easy to take for granted now that I can stand up and run around and play catch with these guys.”

Even after Wuerffel had recovered, the only throwing he did “came in the backyard with the kids.” Wuerffel began training in earnest last month to “get a little rust off the arm” in preparation for the AFFL tournament.dolphins_102

Former Steelers doctor gets 10 years for steroid and painkiller distribution

A former Steelers team physician was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after being found guilty of conspiring to illegally distribute anabolic steroids, human growth hormone and narcotic painkillers.

According to Jonathan Silver of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 68-year-old Richard Rydze was sentenced Tuesday after being convicted last May on 180 counts. He was accused of distributing painkillers since 2005 and trafficking in human growth hormone and steroids since 2007.

Fowler reports Bell increased his asking price in time for the 2018 negotiations, and that caused the Steelers to step back (via another franchise tag) and reassess where they stand with their All-Pro running back.

It’s logical Bell’s price would go up, given his 2018 tag number being $14.5MM instead of $12.1MM and that the cap now resides at $177MM. A report earlier this week said Bell may be looking for $17MM AAV, but Fowler said that’s probably just a negotiating tactic rather than a baseline price. He expects the 26-year-old back’s floor remains the $14.5MM franchise tag number, with it possibly taking more than $15MM per year to seal the deal.

If the Jaguars don’t make a big move up the draft board, they’re expected to add either a top tight end like Hurst or a receiver like Texas A&M’s Christian Kirk. Hurst fills a more pressing and unique need.

The Colts make a move up in Round 1 to get the running back they like in Jones, who reminds many of Melvin Gordon. After Frank Gore’s departure, the Colts need a plug-and-play running back.dolphins_017

Falcons sign cornerback Justin Bethel

The Falcons added some depth on defense and heft to their special teams Saturday.

The team announced the signing of former Cardinals cornerback Justin Bethel.

The Golf Channel studio team commented, via Mike Doocy of DFW’s Fox4, that “this is like a Division III quarterback starting in a Super Bowl.” (It actually would have been funnier if the line had been a “Division I-AA quarterback starting in a Super Bowl” since Romo played at Division I-AA Northern Illinois and never made a Super Bowl.)

Davis, their 2005 first-rounder who has overcome three torn ACLs, played in the Super Bowl with a broken arm and won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, is retiring at the end of the coming season.seahawks_034

Thompson is easy to overlook — playing alongside Davis and Luke Kuechly will do that — but the Panthers believe he’s a key part of their future on defense. He started 36 games the last three seasons.

The Browns trade of cornerback C.J. Smith to the Seahawks has been nullified, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Yates did not list a reason.

Smith reverts back to Cleveland, and Seattle will get its conditional 2020 seventh-round pick back.

The Browns had been expected to cut Smith before the trade.

If convicted on all charges, He faces up to 11 years in prison.

The 49ers drafted Foster 31st overall last year after questions about his health and character caused him to drop from being a possible top 10 pick.

Ridley and Moore are excellent options for the former type of receiver. Ridley might not have ideal top-end speed, but he’s good at creating separation both on the perimeter and in the middle, and he can catch everything. Moore can take over games with volume and can take any play to the house.

Right in Dallas’ own backyard is Sutton, a behemoth (6-3, 218 pounds) who can both outrun cornerbacks and go up and get the ball over them, a la Bryant. Ridley is the safest. Sutton has the highest upside. Moore combines both of those elements. Any of the three would make Prescott happy.

If Dallas’ first-round pick is not a wideout, then it must be defensive line or offensive line, in that order of selection preference should the Cowboys stay at No. 19.

Fox Sports acquired the rights to “Thursday Night Football” through 2022 for $3.3 billion in January and will avoid another red-green debacle like 2015’s Bills-Jets game or the ketchup-mustard game between the Buccaneers and Rams.

Last season, some Washington players reportedly refused to wear their all-mustard-yellow color rush uniforms and, according to former Redskins tight end and current radio personality Chris Cooley, instead opted for a burgundy jersey with burgundy bottoms.

The Packers make a play for Notre Dame’s Quenton Nelson if the guard falls into the double-digit picks. Nelson is the best offensive lineman in the draft, and that would get Rodgers’ attention. Green Bay hasn’t drafted an offensive lineman in the first round since Derek Sherrod in 2010, but Nelson would be a perfect fit. Could the Packers get new Hall of Fame inductee Jerry Kramer to announce the pick?

The Packers can add another tight end or receiver, and Penn State’s Mike Gesicki, a freakish tight end who would pair well with new acquisition Jimmy Graham, or Oklahoma State’s James Washington, the Biletnikoff Award winner who averaged 19.8 yards per catch for his career with the Cowboys, would be options. Auburn guard Braden Smith also should be on the Packers’ Day 2 radar.seahawks_089

The Kansas City Chiefs have added yet another running back to an already crowded backfield.

Former Arizona Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams is signing a one-year deal with K.C., a source told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Williams reportedly had “multiple options” but chose the Chiefs because of the “fresh start” it represented.

Despite Bryant’s decrease in production over the years, the quarterback will miss the veteran presence, who leaves a wide receiver room now populated by the likes of Allen Hurns , Terrance Williams , Deonte Thompson and Cole Beasley . It’s hard to replace a franchise legend and Dallas’ all-time leader in touchdown receptions (73), something Prescott is well aware of.

“He’s a great player. He did a lot of great things for us,” Prescott said of Bryant. “He was a guy, man-to-man, you go to. At this point, we’ve got to figure that out with the guys we’ve got I’m sure we’ll go after guys in the draft or free agency. All I can do is continue to get better at my job.

“Dez is going to be a hard guy to replace. He’s a talented guy. He will be missed.”

“Their top three choices are Darnold, Saquon Barkley and Bradley Chubb,” an unidentified NFL executive told NJ Advance Media. “They are debating Barkley vs. Chubb, because they need an edge-rusher, but the scouts love Barkley.”

UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen is projected by most to be the top quarterback taken and certainly is expected to go in the early part of the first round April 26. However, even if he’s available, the Giants have no intention of selecting Rosen.

“If Darnold is available, they’re taking Darnold,” the NFL talent evaluator said. “They don’t like Rosen.”

As a junior, Rosen, 21, threw for 3,717 yards and 26 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 11 games last season for UCLA, while Darnold, 20, finished 2017 with 26 touchdowns and 13 picks as a redshirt sophomore at USC.seahawks_123

Browns’ 2018 draft picks: Projecting first-rounders, late-round sleepers

The Cleveland Browns have the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, which runs April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

It’s a chance for Cleveland’s management — led by owner Jimmy Haslam, general manager John Dorsey and coach Hue Jackson — to make an emphatic statement that would put memories of an 0-16 season the rearview mirror. While the Browns are expected to spend the No. 1 pick on a franchise quarterback, Cleveland has five picks in the first two rounds.

It’s already an interesting quarterback room in the land where Elway and Peyton Manning set the standard while winning three Super Bowls between them. There’s an enigma in 2016 first-rounder Paxton Lynch, whom Elway traded up to draft but has been a major disappointment. Chad Kelly, a talented college QB at Ole Miss who has fought through recent injuries, also is on the roster after being drafted in the seventh round last year.

By all accounts, Keenum is a great teammate who won’t rock the boat no matter the outcome on draft day. But down deep, he’s got to believe he has graduated from his days of keeping the seat warm until he is replaced by the proverbial future franchise quarterback.

And returning to clipboard-holding duties in Denver after leading Minnesota to a division title and one step from the Super Bowl would be hard to take.

Still, Gronkowski’s potential absence from voluntary workouts doesn’t necessarily mean the All-Pro tight end intends to hang up his cleats quite yet. Rapoport reports that Gronkowski has trained this offseason at the TB12 Sports Therapy Center, and the expectation remains that he will play in 2018.

Gronkowski wouldn’t represent the only major absence from the Patriots ‘ offseason program, either. Tom Brady is currently on a trip to Qatar with his family and will miss the workouts in Foxborough.

While injuries have limited Gronkowski in recent years, he still ranks among the league’s most productive tight ends. He caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017 and leads all tight ends in receiving yardage (3,924) and touchdown receptions (34) since 2014. Gronkowski has earned first-team All-Pro honors five times in his career, most recently last season. seahawks_022

Matthew Stafford and wife Kelly expecting third child

After Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and wife Kelly welcomed their first children into the world last March, twins Chandler and Sawyer, the couple announced via Instagram they are expecting a third child later this year.

The Mets have started off hot, finding themselves atop the NL East entering the season’s second full week. Michael Conforto returned far earlier than anticipated — a date that was once rumored to be mid-May or even early June turned into April 5. And what did he do? After stating that he was back because he wanted to face Stephen Strasburg, he hit a homer in his third at-bat against him. Conforto is now 3-for-18 in his career against Strasburg, but two of those three hits have been home runs. — Langs

Most of the Indians’ hitters have been ice-cold initially, but getting oft-injured Michael Brantley back from the DL provided an immediate boost as he powered a win in their home opener. Nick Goody has also looked good stepping into Bryan Shaw’s shoes to join Andrew Miller and Cody Allen and create a new late-game power trio in the pen. — Kahrl

People with higher alcohol tolerances can sometimes function at that impairment level.

Smith arrived at the police station for ankle monitoring. He has been arrested three times in the span of two months, beginning with an alleged act of domestic violence on March 3.

A woman, later revealed to be Smith’s fiancee, said the former Pro Bowler bit her wrists and drank two bottles of tequila during an altercation. Smith fled the scene before police arrived.

He was later charged with domestic violence, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism. After violating the protective order by contacting the woman, he was charged with three additional misdemeanors.

Smith last played for the Oakland Raiders during the 2015 season. He has been suspended for repeated violations of the NFL’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies.

Sernoffsky reported Smith will likely stay in jail until at least Friday. la_kings_052
